1. Introduction

The SCD is a torque-limiting steering coupling device designed to help reduce the risk of serious wrist and upper extremity injuries during high-impact crashes in racing. It is engineered to allow controlled slip above a calibrated torque threshold, reducing the force transmitted to the driver’s wrists while maintaining steering control.

This guide provides important information for proper installation, verification, and use of the SCD.

2. Important Safety Information

Read this entire guide before installation or use.

Racing is an inherently dangerous activity. No safety device can prevent all injuries.
The SCD must be installed correctly. Improper installation can cause steering failure, loss of control, or serious injury.
Each SCD is individually calibrated and inscribed with its Peak Slip Force and Dynamic Force values. These values are also printed on the packaging.
This device contains a dry-film lubricant applied during manufacturing. No re-lubrication or maintenance is required.
You must visually inspect the device after any significant impact or crash.
Tampering with, modifying, or disassembling this device voids all warranties and liability.

By installing or using this product, you acknowledge that you have read and understand this guide and accept all risks associated with its use.

3. Compatibility

The SCD is designed to mount between the quick disconnect and the steering wheel. It is compatible with most common racing quick-release systems, including:

Sweet Manufacturing quick releases
Wilwood quick releases
Joes quick releases
Most 3-bolt and 6-bolt steering wheel patterns

Important Notes:

Confirm compatibility with your specific quick-release before installation.
The device uses the same mounting hardware and torque specifications as your quick-release manufacturer (Sweet or Wilwood).
The SCD is not intended for street or road use.

Note: The three 5/16-18 button head cap screws are pre-encapsulated inside the device and do not need to be inserted by the customer.

5. Installation Instructions

Important: The SCD must be attached to the quick disconnect first, before mounting the steering wheel.

Warning: The three internal mounting bolts must be tightened evenly and together. If one bolt is tightened significantly more than the others, the bolts can bind and damage the device.

Recommended Steps:

Position the SCD on the Quick Disconnect Place the SCD onto the quick disconnect. Ensure it is oriented correctly so the device will engage properly when the steering wheel is straight.
Tighten the Pre-Encapsulated Button Head Screws
- The three 5/16-18 button head cap screws are pre-encapsulated inside the SCD. You do not insert them.
- Access the bolt heads through the tapped holes in the steering wheel.
- Use an Allen wrench to tighten the screws into the quick disconnect.
- Tighten the bolts evenly and in a crisscross pattern, drawing them down together.
- Do not fully tighten one bolt before the others. Uneven tightening can cause the bolts to bind.
- Torque the bolts to the specifications recommended by your quick-release manufacturer (Sweet or Wilwood).
Mount the Steering Wheel to the SCD Use the original bolts that previously mounted the steering wheel to the quick disconnect to now secure the wheel to the SCD.
- Torque these bolts to the manufacturer’s recommended specifications.
Final Check
- Confirm the steering wheel is straight when the car’s wheels are straight.
- Verify smooth engagement and operation of the SCD by hand before racing.

Critical Warnings:

Attach the SCD to the quick disconnect before mounting the steering wheel.
The three internal button head bolts must be tightened evenly together.
Do not over-torque or under-torque the mounting bolts.
Ensure the quick-release is fully seated and locked before racing.
Do not modify the device or its engagement surfaces.

6. Verifying Calibration Values

Before installation:

Confirm that the Peak Slip Force and Dynamic Force values inscribed on the device match the values on the packaging and your order.
If the inscribed values do not match what you expected, do not install the device and contact LaPlante Racing Products immediately.

7. Post-Installation Inspection

After installation and before the first use:

Confirm smooth operation and positive engagement.
Check that the steering wheel returns to the correct position after any manual disengagement.
Verify there is no excessive play in the system.

8. How the SCD Works

The SCD is designed to remain fully engaged during normal driving. When a high-impact event exceeds the calibrated peak slip force, the device allows controlled slip between the steering wheel and shaft. This reduces the torque transmitted to the driver’s wrists to approximately 40–60 ft-lbs while still maintaining steering control. The driver never completely loses the ability to steer. After the impact force drops, the device is designed to automatically re-engage into the next available position so the driver can continue steering.

9. After a Significant Impact

Reinstall the steering wheel and test the device by hand. Pay attention to:
- How the device slips when force is applied
- How cleanly it resets and re-engages
- Whether it returns to the original straight position
If the release behavior feels noticeably different than before (easier to slip, harder to reset, or does not feel consistent), do not continue using the device and contact LaPlante Racing Products.

10. Limitations of the Device

The SCD only helps above its calibrated torque threshold. Lower-force impacts will not activate the device.
Performance depends on proper installation, vehicle setup, impact angle and severity, and other factors.
The SCD does not replace good driving technique, proper safety equipment (HANS, helmet, seat, harness, etc.), or other safety systems.
No device can guarantee injury prevention in all crash scenarios.

11. Maintenance

This device uses a dry-film lubricant applied during manufacturing. No re-lubrication, cleaning, or routine maintenance is required. Do not apply additional grease, oil, or anti-seize to the engagement surfaces.
